Los Angeles – János Martonyi, Hungary’s foreign minister wrote a letter to the Miami Herald. The letter is part of the Orbán-government “charm offensive” to seduce the American public. Mr. Martonyi targets Florida ’s large anti-communist Cuban exile community.
He writes, “having lived under communism, I understand the suffering that totalitarian governments inflict.” This is why he feels that Hungary and the United States have a moral obligation to help the Cuban people control their own destiny.
As a Hungarian-American who escaped Hungary ’s communist regime several decades ago, I share Mr. Martonyi’s sentiment that we have to help the Cuban people. However I question how much Mr. Martonyi knows about the suffering of the Hungarian people under communist rule.
Mr. Martonyi didn’t mention in his article that he was a member of the Hungarian Communist Party who fully supported the totalitarian regime in a senior post at the Hungarian Ministry of Trade.
Mr. Martonyi didn’t suffer; he was the beneficiary of the communist system.
